July 31: Still Standing

Image
“Still Standing: From the Pit to Purpose” Sharon Campbell-Danvers,  Shepherdess, CIC After the death of Jacob, Joseph honoured his father's final request—he brought him to the burial place he had promised. In doing so, Joseph fulfilled his father's desires with deep love and reverence. During his father’s illness, Joseph likely had time to speak heart-to-heart with him. I imagine them sitting together, talking about the years they had lost. Joseph would have shared his journey—the moment he was betrayed by his brothers, thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned. Yet he would also have testified of God's faithfulness, the dreams fulfilled, and the position of influence he now held. I can imagine Jacob weeping, embracing his son, the one he thought was dead—now alive, strong, and restored. Their bond rekindled, forgiveness flowed like healing oil. While Joseph and his father were reconnecting, Joseph’s brothers were unsettled. They feared that now,...

July 30: Confession Cure

Finding Healing Through Confession James 5:16b (KJV): "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." Prescription for the Cure James 5:16 provides a divine prescription for the cure to many of our ailments: confession. But how can confession lead to healing? How do we receive this spiritual medication? Recently, I have been overwhelmed by the number of people I know who are battling illnesses such as cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and many others. Death feels like a frequent visitor. It appears in our homes, our families, our churches, and even our workplaces. We have often found ourselves in a place of spiritual warfare, crying out to God on behalf of our loved ones. Amazingly, the impossible becomes possible when the church comes together in prayer. However, here is a question that weighs heavily on my heart. Could we be blocking our healing by refusing to confe...

July 29: When God Feels Silent: Trusting Through the Shadows”

Image
Theme: Bold Faith in the Face of Grief and Silence Corry Chambers, Shepherdess, Women’s Ministries Director, CIC Scripture Focus: Job 13:19–28 (The Clear Word) There are seasons in every woman’s life when the silence of heaven feels heavier than any spoken word. You’ve prayed, fasted, cried into your pillow, and still—no breakthrough, no clear answer. Just quiet. Job knew this kind of quiet. Not the peaceful, soul-stilling quiet, but the aching kind that echoes your pain back at you. In Job 13:19–28, Job is no longer trying to pretend he understands what’s happening. He asks questions we’ve all whispered through tears: “What have I done to deserve this?” “Are You angry with me, Lord?” “Why do I feel so alone?” He says, “I want to present my case before You, Lord” (v.19), but then adds, “Please don’t strike me down before I even speak” (v.21). What vulnerability! He longs to speak honestly with God, but he’s also afraid—afraid of judgment, of being misunderstood, of punishment fo...

July 28: God’s Presence in Life’s Darkest Moments

Image
Theme:  Comforted in the Valley Mitzie Williams, Maranatha SDA Church "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me." Psalm 23:4 There are moments in life when darkness seems to surround us. During these seasons suffering, uncertainty, and pain shake the very foundations of our faith. Yet, as women of God, we are assured that even in our deepest valleys, our Shepherd walks beside us. His presence brings comfort, strength, and hope, allowing us to move forward without fear. In April 2016, my journey took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. The recommended treatment was chemotherapy and radiotherapy which brought intense physical side effects, most notably severe nerve damage that left me unable to walk properly. The nerves controlling my lower body were badly affected, making standing nearly impossible and causing me to fall without warning. The pain was...

July 27: Drawing Near to God

Image
Theme: Strengthening your relationship with him   Dacia Chambers, Shepherdess CIC,  Savannah SDA Church Scripture: James 4:8 "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."   In my early years as a Christian, I remember the feeling I had when I had just given my life to the Lord. I struggled with the idea as I wondered whether my relationship with God would be sustained. I had seen so many before who started the Christian journey and stopped somewhere along the way and I was fearful of that. When I considered the life, I had to give up for the life in Christ, it was an internal battle. However, I realized that God is more interested in our individual relationship with Him rather than our collective our individual comparison of our Christian journey. Once I was baptized, oh, how it burned within me to witness to others and what joy it brought even if it meant to do missionary work i...

July 26: The Majestic Warrior

Image
Corry Chambers, Shepherdess, Women’s Ministries Director, CIC Theme: “Victorious, But Never Alone” Scripture Focus: Psalm 144:10-15 (NKJV) “ The One who gives salvation to kings, Who delivers David His servant from the deadly sword. Rescue me and deliver me from the hand of foreigners… Happy are the people whose God is the Lord!” Psalm 144:10-11, 15 David, the mighty warrior, was no ordinary man. He had slain lions, defeated giants, and commanded armies. But in Psalm 144, we glimpse a powerful truth: even a warrior as skilled and courageous as David knew his strength wasn’t enough. He called on God—not once, but continually—for deliverance, wisdom, and victory. David calls God “the One who gives salvation to kings,” acknowledging that his position, power, and military success were not of his own doing. Despite his battlefield expertise, he knew the true source of his strength was divine. David’s posture is one of humility. He cries out for rescue from “the deadly sword” and fr...

July 25:The Power of Prayer

Image
Theme: Seeking God in all circumstances. Sarah Bevans Shepherdess,  George Town SDA Church Scripture: James 5:16 “Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other  so that you may be healed . The prayerof a righteous  person is powerful and effective.” The prelude of the verse for our devotional reflection today  is verse 13 of the fifth chapter of James – it clearly captures  the attitude and heart of the believer when engaged in prayer:   “Is any among you afflicted?  Let him pray. Is any merry? Let him sing psalms. Prayer is not just an activity but a lifestyle, not just a cliché that we tell people when we are lost for words, but an attitude that guides our actions as we face each day. The year 2013 will always be a reminder to me of the power of prayer. My husband had been suffering from excruciating nerve pain, and we did not know the cause. However, the pain was so intense at times that he would just isolate hi...

July 24: Do Good When You Know it

Image
Theme:  Obedience to God’s calling Quida Johnson Savannah SDA Church The Unseen Strength of Servant Leadership Key Text: James 4:17 James 4:17(NIV): If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.   Have you ever wondered why the hands that serve are often the ones least acknowledged? Have you found yourself, like Martha of Bethany, bustling in the kitchen or tending to the needs of others while longing for a simple word of thanks? For many of us, especially as women, service seems woven into the very fabric of our being. Whether as nurses, mothers, leaders, or friends, we often find ourselves putting others first, sometimes to the point of exhaustion and invisibility.   There are days when the weight of servitude feels heavy. The many hours spent planning, giving, and caring leave us drained and unappreciated. It is tempting, in those moments, to withdraw, to wish for a season of being served rather than serving. Yet, as I r...
