March 7 When Fear Takes the Wheel

Scripture: For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1 vs 7
Fear is a natural response to danger, an instinct that has been woven into our very being by God. It triggers a swift reaction, preparing us to act quickly to preserve our lives. The body releases adrenaline, our hearts race, and our senses become heightened. Fear can save us, but it can also overwhelm us. At times, it takes the wheel of our hearts and minds, steering us in directions that are driven more by anxiety than by faith.
We’ve all experienced moments when fear grips us. It might be a near-miss on the road or an unexpected health scare. Our knees go weak, and we feel the weight of uncertainty. In those moments, it’s easy to feel as if our lives are slipping away, or that we are constantly in survival mode.
But why would God design us to feel fear in the first place? Why would He allow us to experience these anxious moments?
The answer lies in understanding that fear, in its proper place, serves a purpose. It keeps us alert and aware of the dangers around us. But the danger arises when fear becomes the constant driver of our lives. It should not dictate our decisions or define our responses. Instead, God invites us to turn to Him, trust in His promises, and let His peace replace our fears.
When we feel the surge of fear, we must examine our obedience to God. Fear may momentarily take the wheel, but it is obedience to God’s word that will always steer us back to peace. We are not called to live in a constant state of fear. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.
Psalm 34:4-6 tells us, “I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; He saved him out of all his troubles.” When we call on God in our fear, He listens and rescues us from the anxiety that seeks to overwhelm us. His answer is always one of deliverance and peace.
Deuteronomy 31:6 encourages us: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” No matter the dangers we face, we are never alone. God’s presence is with us, strengthening and upholding us, empowering us to overcome fear with courage.
In Isaiah 43:1-2, God reassures us, “But now, this is what the Lord says—He who created you, Jacob, He who formed you, Israel: ‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.’” In every trial, in every fear, God promises His protection. The storms of life may come, but they will not overwhelm us because we belong to Him.
2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us of the spirit God has given us: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.” This is the antidote to fear—the Spirit of God instills in us power, love, and the discipline to control our fears and walk boldly in His strength.
In these passages, God reminds us that He is with us in every situation. He has called us by name, and He will not abandon us, no matter the danger or fear we face. It’s not about the absence of fear, but about trusting in God’s presence and His promises.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of fear that alerts us to danger and helps us survive. But Lord, we ask that when fear takes the wheel, You remind us to surrender it to You. Help us to trust in Your presence and Your promises. Teach us to be strong and courageous, knowing that You are always with us. Let Your peace replace our anxiety and help us to walk in the power, love, and self-discipline You have given us. May we never allow fear to control us, but instead, may we place our full trust in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray.
Amen.
May we find peace in God’s unwavering love and feel His presence guiding us in all moments of fear.
