May 12: God is Still in Control

Theme: Recognizing God's Power Over All

Scripture Reading: Job 9: 4 – 10.

"God is wise in heart and

mighty in strength. Who has

hardened himself against

Him and prospered? He

removes the mountains, and

they do not know When He

overturns them in His anger;

He shakes the earth out of its

place, And its pillars

tremble; He commands the

sun, and it does not rise; He

seals off the stars; He alone

spreads out the heavens, And treads

on the waves of the sea; He made

the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,

And the chambers of the south;

He does great things past finding out,

 Yes, wonders without number."

Have you ever felt utterly powerless in your life? Perhaps a financial burden, health crisis, broken relationship, or educational challenge has spiraled beyond your ability to fix, and you are left wondering, where is God? During these times, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and anxious and to doubt God's power, existence, and whether He cares.

My earliest personal recollection of God's sovereignty is from middle school. The Physical Education (PE) teacher could not comprehend why I did not attend school activities on Saturdays. He scheduled all the practical aspects of the class on Sabbaths, and those activities accounted for fifty percent of the final grade, with the theory making up the other fifty percent. I prayed to God for a solution, but it seemed that He did not hear me because my grade was fifty percent at the end of the term. I thought I had failed PE, but then God showed up. During Sports Day, the PE teacher announced that the winning team from the football tournament would get ten bonus points. As you can imagine, I was on the winning team, and the additional points took me to the sixty percent pass mark. This experience has taught me that God is in control and works behind the scenes even when things seem unfair or hopeless; his timing is perfect.

Similarly, Job reminds us that God's wisdom and strength are unmatched (vs. 4a) and surpass all human understanding. God is capable of not only guiding us but also sustaining us. When we are weak, He is strong. When we don't know what to do, He already has a plan. Instead of relying on our understanding, we should surrender our situation to God and trust that His wisdom and strength are perfect and sufficient.

No one can stand against God and prosper (vs. 4b). We naturally resist God's ways when we do not understand them. We want to be in control, and we want answers. However, this verse reminds us that fighting against God's plan only leads to struggle. When we surrender to God, we find peace. That does not mean life will be easy, but it does mean we will be carried by the One who holds the world together. If you have been resisting God's leading in an area of your life, take a moment to surrender. Trust that His way is better than yours, even if you cannot see it yet.

Verses five to nine further remind us that God's power controls all creation. The same God who moves mountains and commands the stars is the One who holds your life in His hands. If God can control the forces of the universe, He can handle your problems. Natural disasters or unforeseen circumstances do not limit God. Nothing takes Him by surprise. Instead of letting your problems dictate your peace, focus on God's power. Remind yourself that He is bigger than any obstacle you face.

In verse ten, Job reminds us that God's wonders are beyond human understanding. He had lost everything—his family, his health, and his wealth. Yet, even in his suffering, he acknowledged God's greatness. God's ways are beyond our comprehension, but that does not mean He is not working. Often, we look back only after the storm and see His hand guiding us all along. Instead of demanding to understand everything, choose to trust God. Let go of the need for answers and hold onto the truth that God's wonders are without number.

Remember, God is still in control, no matter what you face today. He is Wise, Powerful, and Sovereign over all things. You do not have to figure everything out; I invite you to trust the One who already has. Just like Job and I did.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that you are all-wise and all-powerful. Thank you for listening to and answering my prayers. I do not understand some things, but I choose to trust and surrender my fears and worries to You today, knowing You are in control. Strengthen my faith and remind me of Yours greatness. Forgive me for the times I doubt you, and continue to give me a testimony to share with others. In Jesus' name, amen.
