July 21: Caring for the Vulnerable

Theme: Pure Religion

James 1:27

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

In a world where religion can often become complicated, performative, or even divisive, the author of the book James under Divine Inspiration, gives us a refreshing and sobering reminder that  pure religion is described as more than just an abstract belief, but it is substantiated by actions, motives and practices that demonstrate love, compassion and true character.

James continues to emphasize that “true faith not only hears God’s Word but obeys it (1:22). It not only sympathizes with the poor but also cares for them (1:27, 2:1-13). It affects one’s tongue (1:26, 3:2-12) and how one responds to conflict (4:1-3, 11-12), trials (1:2-4), money (5:1-6), planning (4:13-17), the world (1:27, 4:4), and much more.”

This underestimation of religion is transformative and transforming, and as a practical learner, I submit that it is often not practiced. I have been participating in a series of conferences and reports where, as a church, we are giving an opportunity to declare to the world what we are doing regarding “kingdom building.” In theory, it is always uplifting to hear of the great work and miracles that are happening around the world. The power of effective witnessing and service stands as a pillar of the foundation of the church. I have often reflected on this and ask myself, where do I stand in this great picture as a member of this organization- “church”?  What scope of influence have I rendered to live out pure religion and be true to the calling that God has placed on my life?

Self-searching and deep thought led me to understand that God has provided not just one, but many opportunities for me to practice being a true Christian. A great author summarizes the thought in this way:

“Everyone should consider the solemn question, what is my life toward God and my fellow men? No man lives(exists) unto himself. No life is simply neutral in its results....

Every soul is under obligation to live a Christian life. Our individuality, our talents, our time, our influence, our abilities, all given to us by God, are to be rendered back to Him in willing service. The aim and object of life is not to secure temporal advantages, but to make sure of the eternal advantages. God claims your soul, your body, your capabilities; for He has bought them by His own precious blood, and they all belong to Him. It is robbery to withhold yourself from God.... The question of importance to us is whether our life is interwoven with that of Jesus? 105The Youth's Instructor, June 21, 1894.

When I reflected on the inspired words written more than one hundred year before I was born yet almost with a direct quote to my life I could not help but seek for ways to be more connected with the work that God is doing on my behalf by being intentional in partnering with him in the things that matters most- “Kingdom business”.  It is unconventional to live out true religion in a time where almost everyone is focused on self-preservation, self-fortification, and self-ratification; it seems almost extinct to practice self-sacrifice and self-denial, which are dual components of service to God. Today, as we look at the new page God has given us to write our stories, I encourage you as I encourage myself – let us live out “pure religion” in practical ways. Here are some Ideas:

1.       Care for the Vulnerable: adopt or foster a family, provide meals, clothing, or care. Visit widows and the elderly in your community or church.

2.       Practice Holiness in daily life: guard your heart and mind. (Be intentional with what you consume, media, conversation, and environment. Stay accountable and live with integrity, and avoid materialism.

3.       Show mercy at home, at work, and in church: Do not overlook those who are struggling financially or emotionally. Advocate for fair treatment of others. Speak up.

Prayer: Dear lord, help me to not settle for a religion of words. Teach me to love like you do, to see the need around me and respond with actions. Keep my heart clean in a world that often distracts and deceives. May my life reflect faith that is pure, active, and pleasing to you. Amen!
