Prayers That Protect Your Marriage

Ecclesiastes 4:12 Praying Together

By Sharon Campbell Danvers | Daughters Arise Ministries

Scripture Focus:
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV)

When building a house, one of the first considerations is how to protect it, such as with walls, fences, gates, and alarms. We do the same with our children, covering them in prayer before school, before travel, before life’s big moments. But how often do we apply that same level of spiritual protection to our marriages?

Too often, when marital difficulties arise, our first reaction is to complain. We talk to friends, family, or even suffer in silence. But what if our first response was to pray?

Prayer is one of the most powerful tools God has given us to nurture and protect our relationships. When we invite God into the centre of our marriages, we activate spiritual covering and divine perspective. Prayer softens hearts, strengthens resolve, and aligns our love with God’s love.

What if we made it a habit to pray for and with our spouse every single day?

  1. Pray for their needs and personal struggles.
  2. Pray for their strengths and growth.
  3. Pray for love, patience, protection, and peace.
  4. Pray for their success, calling, and faith.

Praying with your spouse builds emotional and spiritual intimacy. It opens the heart. It silences the enemy’s lies. It invites unity. The act of holding hands and lifting your voices to heaven as one is a beautiful and powerful expression of covenant.

Prayer powers up your marriage with divine strength. When a husband and wife stand together in prayer, and Christ is the third strand, nothing can easily break them.

P.R.A.Y.E.R.

  • P – Pause to connect with God before reacting

  • R – Release your fears, burdens, and pain

  • A – Ask God to bless and strengthen your spouse

  • Y – Yield your own will and invite God’s direction

  • E – Encourage your spouse with Spirit-led words

  • R – Rejoice in God’s answers, even before they come

Reflection Questions:

  1. How often do you pray with your spouse, not just for them?

  2. What burdens or struggles should be brought to God instead of people?

  3. What would change in your relationship if prayer became a daily habit?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of marriage and for the power of prayer. Teach us to cover one another in prayer daily. Help us to pause before we react, and to seek Your wisdom before we seek advice from others. Strengthen our bond through every prayer we whisper together and grow our intimacy through our shared connection with You. May our marriage be a three-stranded cord that stands firm in love and faith.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
