Boxing Day
We have come to appreciate December 26 as another holiday to unwind after the festive Christmas celebrations. It is often a day for cleaning up, packing away decorations, returning gifts, eating leftovers, and resting from the busyness of Christmas Day.
But is this just another holiday? What should it truly signify or represent? Is this a worthwhile tradition to keep? In fact, what is Boxing Day really all about?
Historically, Boxing Day was a day of generosity. It was the day when boxes of gifts, food, or money were given to servants, workers, and those in need as a tangible expression of gratitude. It was not centered on receiving, but on giving. In many ways, it was meant to extend the spirit of Christmas beyond December 25.
Yet just as many have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas, it is possible that we have also forgotten what Boxing Day should represent. Christmas proclaims that God gave His greatest gift in Jesus Christ. Boxing Day was meant to echo that truth through action.
So the deeper question becomes this: Have we also forgotten Jesus?
If Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, Boxing Day challenges us to live out His example. Jesus came not to be served but to serve. He noticed the overlooked, fed the hungry, welcomed the outcast, and gave sacrificially. Boxing Day invites us to pause and ask how we will carry Christ into the days that follow Christmas. Will we pack Him away with the decorations, or will we allow His love to shape how we give, forgive, and serve?
Boxing Day is not just about rest or recovery. It is a call to reflection and response. It reminds us that the gift of Jesus was never meant to end at the manger but to move through our hands, our homes, and our hearts into the lives of others.
Main Scripture
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Acts 20:35
Reflection
Boxing Day invites us to remember that generosity is a response to grace. Because God gave first, we are called to give freely. This day challenges us to ask how we can live as gifts of Christ’s love in a world that still longs for hope.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of Yourself. Help us not to forget You once the celebrations are over. Teach us to live with grateful hearts and generous hands. May we carry the spirit of Christmas into every day that follows, serving others as You have served us. Amen.
