They That Wait
As I listened to the song about those who wait on the Lord, my memory shifted to when I was a child coming home from school and no dinner was prepared.
I remember how much I disliked having to go to the shop to buy what would be cooked. I did not enjoy the extra effort. I did not enjoy the waiting while the food was being prepared. Standing there, hungry, watching the pot on the stove felt like forever.
But when the food was finally ready and I began to eat, something interesting happened. I did not remember the wait. I did not focus on the delay. What stayed with me was the taste.
The satisfaction swallowed the frustration.
The nourishment erased the inconvenience.
It makes me think differently about waiting.
“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.”
Isaiah 40:31
Waiting does not mean being forgotten. It does not mean being denied. It does not mean nothing is happening.
It means something is being prepared.
They that wait on the food shall be fed. But they that wait on the Lord shall be strengthened.
Food satisfies for a moment. Waiting on God renews strength. Food fills the stomach. Waiting on God fortifies the soul.
It is not unusual for us to want to go ahead of God. Hunger makes you impatient. Desire makes you rush. Fear makes you move before you are instructed.
And that is where problems tend to begin.
When we run ahead of God, we often create what we then have to pray our way out of. We step into relationships too soon. We accept positions without clarity. We make decisions without peace.
Waiting feels uncomfortable. It feels slow. It feels unnecessary.
But what if the wait is where the preparation happens?
What if God is seasoning the blessing?
What if He is aligning timing, people, provision, and protection in ways you cannot see?
When the meal is finally served, you will not talk about how long it took. You will testify about how good it tastes.
It is better for us to wait.
Better to wait and be strengthened.
Better to wait and be aligned.
Better to wait and be prepared.
Because those who wait on the Lord do not leave empty. They leave renewed.
And when God finally serves what He has been preparing, the taste of His promise will make the wait worthwhile.

Lord, help me to wait
