March 5: Ordered Steps
![]() |
| Sharon Campbell-Danvers Key Text: Psalm 37:23 KJV - “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” |
When we step out each day, we usually know where we are going, what we will do, and by what time we need to arrive. There is purpose in getting dressed, preparing our meals, starting the car, or catching the bus. Every movement is intentional because we have a destination in mind.
I remember a morning when everything was mapped out perfectly. The schedule was tight, the timing was precise, and I felt confident about how the day would unfold. Then unexpectedly, plans shifted. A delay here, an interruption there, and suddenly I had to pause, reroute, and adjust. What felt clear became complicated. What felt controlled became uncertain.
Life can be like that.
Sometimes we have to stop when we would rather move. Sometimes we have to change direction when we were certain of the path. At times it can feel overwhelming, even frustrating. In the Caribbean we say we “buck we toe” when we stumble unexpectedly. It hurts. It surprises us. It slows us down.
But Psalm 37:23 reminds us that even our pauses, reroutes, and stumbles are not outside of God’s awareness.
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.”
Ordered means established and directed. It suggests intention. God is not reacting to your life. He is guiding it. Deviation does not mean defeat. Changing paths does not indicate failure. A delay does not mean denial. Even when you “buck your toe,” God can use the pain to position you.
There is purpose in the process.
Notice the second part of the verse: “and he delighteth in his way.” God delights in the one who trusts Him enough to keep walking. He delights in your obedience, even when you do not understand the route. He delights in your faith when the road feels uncertain.
When life becomes complex and the details are not clearly defined as we would like, we can be confident in this truth:
Our steps are being ordered by the Lord.
And there is purpose in every step.
Key Truths
- God directs the lives of those who seek Him
- Your path is not accidental
- Deviation does not mean defeat
- Delays do not equal denial
- God delights in your faithful walk
Reflection Questions:
- Where in my life do I need to trust God’s ordering instead of my own understanding?
- Have I mistaken a reroute for rejection?
- What “toe-bucking” moment might God be using to reposition me?
Prayer
Father, thank You for ordering my steps. When plans change and the path feels uncertain, help me to trust Your direction. Remind me that delays, detours, and even painful moments are not wasted in Your hands. Give me the confidence to keep walking, knowing You delight in my journey. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
