July 2: Humble Yourself Before God

Theme: The Power of Humility
Scripture: James 4:10 – “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

Introduction
Humility is a foundational principle in the Christian life. The world often associates success with pride, self-promotion, and personal achievement. However, God’s Word teaches that true exaltation comes from humility. James 4:10 is a call to surrender ourselves to God, acknowledging our dependence on Him. When we do this, He lifts us up—not necessarily in the way the world expects, but in a way that aligns with His divine purpose.
True humility seeks to bring glory and honor to God and looks out for the interests of others (Colossians 3.12 14; Philippians 2.3 8). Christ gives us a perfect example of humility. He went to the cross and gave up His life so that others might live.

What Does It Mean to Humble Yourself
1.  Recognizing Our Need for God
Humility begins with acknowledging that we are nothing without God (John 15:5).
It requires us to let go of self-sufficiency and lean on God’s strength.

2.  Submitting to God’s Will
James 4:7 instructs, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Submission means aligning our desires with God’s plan, even when it’s difficult.

3.  Repenting of Pride and Sin
  • Pride separates us from God, while humility draws us closer
  • Proverbs 16:18 warns, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
  • True humility involves confessing our sins and seeking God’s mercy (1 John 1:9).

The Promise: God Will Lift You Up
When we humble ourselves, God lifts us up in various ways:
  • Spiritually – He deepens our relationship with Him, filling us with peace and wisdom.
  • Emotionally, He replaces anxiety with confidence in His plan.
  • In Purpose – He aligns our lives with His calling, allowing us to serve Him effectively.

Jesus: The Ultimate Example of Humility
Philippians 2:5-9 describes Jesus humbling Himself, taking on the nature of a servant, and being obedient to death on a cross. Because of His humility, God exalted Him. This serves as the perfect model for us to follow.

Application: How Can We Walk in Humility?

  • Daily Surrender: Start each day with prayer, acknowledging God’s sovereignty.
  • Serve Others: Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an example of servant leadership (John 13:14-15).
  • Practice Gratitude: Acknowledging God’s blessings helps us avoid pride.
  • Obey God’s Word: Living in obedience shows humility before Him.

Conclusion
Humility isn’t weakness—it is power under God’s control. When we humble ourselves before Him, we position ourselves for His blessings, guidance, and ultimate exaltation. Let us choose to walk in humility daily, trusting that in due time, He will lift us up.

Prayer
Lord, I submit myself to your will, recognizing my need of you, knowing that pride can be my downfall. Help me to be humble by becoming obedient to your will and submitting myself daily to you so that I
might become an instrument of love, care, compassion, and peace in Jesus’ name. Amen
