April 27 Lot’s Wife: Looking Forward, Not Back

Theme: Letting go of the past to embrace God's future.

There’s a powerful moment in the story of Lot’s wife when she looks back—despite the warning, despite the escape to freedom. Her gaze back toward the city of Sodom cost her everything. God had a future for her, but she couldn't fully embrace it because she was too focused on the past. In Genesis 19:26, it says, "But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt." This simple but tragic action reminds us of the danger of looking back when God is calling us forward.

I’ve had moments in my life where I was tempted to look back, to return to the familiar, even though I knew deep down that it wasn’t where God wanted me. There were times when moving forward felt uncertain, and I wanted to retreat to what was comfortable. But through it all, I kept hearing God whisper, “Don’t look back. I have a plan for you.” And with every step forward, I saw His faithfulness.

When I made the decision to move forward, I didn’t know if I could survive on my own. It was a scary journey, but God provided in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I never lacked. I realized that sometimes we cling to the past out of fear, thinking that what we had was better than what God is offering. But God is always ahead of us, preparing a way, and He never leaves us lacking.

Like Lot’s wife, we can be tempted to look back, but when we do, we miss the future God has for us. In Jeremiah 29:11, God promises, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope." God has a future for us, filled with hope and purpose. If we’re always looking back, we may miss what He’s calling us to in the present.

Today, I encourage you to look forward, not back. Let go of what’s behind you and trust that God has already paved the way for you. He is with you every step of the way, and He has great plans.

Let’s pray:
Lord, thank You for the future You have prepared for us. Help us to trust You and let go of the past, knowing that You are faithful to provide for us and guide us into the new things You have in store. Give us the courage to keep moving forward, even when the road ahead seems uncertain. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
