May 21: Shattered but Not Broken

Theme: Darkness Cannot Overcome God’s Light

Scripture: "The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out; the flame of his fire stops burning. The light in his tent becomes dark; the lamp beside him goes out."

— Job 18:5-6 (NIV)

There are seasons when life feels utterly shattered—when loss, betrayal, sickness, or fear creep in like an overwhelming darkness. During these times, that’s when I feel as if every source of light around me has flickered out, leaving me in a place of deep despair. Yet even when everything familiar fades, God’s light within me remains. Sometimes I don’t even notice it and then He sends a message ( through someone or something).

In the book of Job, Bildad speaks about the fate of the wicked—their light goes out because it was never rooted in God. However, those who belong to the Lord carry a different promise: our light comes from an unshakable Source.

John 1:5 reminds us, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." No amount of sorrow, loss, or even the mistakes we've made can extinguish the light of Christ living within us.

You may feel shattered today, but you are not broken beyond repair. Shattered pieces in the hands of a loving God become a masterpiece- a work of art. His light shines brightest through our cracks and our need. Darkness does not win. In Christ, you are still glowing, still standing, still chosen.

When everything around you seems unstable, anchor your heart to this truth: God’s light in you is undefeatable. His plans for you are not over. Even if life feels like it has fallen apart, God is still piecing together a future more beautiful than you can imagine.

Life Lessons:

Darkness is temporary; God’s light is eternal.

Feeling shattered is not the same as being broken beyond hope.

God's light often shines brightest through the broken places of our lives.

Our security comes not from our circumstances but from Christ within us.

Reflection:

Where have you felt the heavy weight of darkness trying to settle over your heart? Invite God into those places. Picture His light flooding every broken space, reminding you that no darkness can overcome His presence in you.

Prayer:

Lord, when I feel shattered by life’s struggles, remind me that Your light in me can never be extinguished. Help me to trust that even my broken places are beautiful in Your hands. Shine through my weakness and let Your love be my strength. I believe that darkness will never have the final word over my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
