"The Well Was Always There"
I have always had a passion for backyard gardening. I was a proud 4-H member in school and studied Agriculture in high school, but honestly, my greatest teacher ended up being YouTube. I spent countless hours learning from videos, trying new techniques, and cultivating a space that brought me peace and joy.
But as the garden grew, so did the water bill. Month after month, it was high—and my husband, ever so practical, kept reminding me to conserve. I felt the weight of his concern. We talked about it and agreed: one day, we would dig a deep well on the property. It was a dream. A solution that seemed just out of reach because of the cost. So, we kept wishing and waiting.
In the meantime, watering with buckets became exhausting. My back ached, and I struggled. Eventually, we decided it was time to get serious. We contacted a well-drilling company to get a quote. While they were on the property, I noticed an old pipe at the back that we had always wondered about. On a whim, I asked my husband to have them check it out.
To our shock, the technician told us it was already a well! I couldn’t believe it. He suggested we have it flagged before proceeding with digging a new one. We called a plumber, and he said there was too much dirt at the bottom. Still, we hoped. We went ahead and had the well flagged and cleared—and out came beautiful, clear water!
I cried. I praised. Our prayers were answered.
Now, we have sprinklers all over the garden. And as if that wasn’t enough, we even discovered a functioning pump on the property that we never knew existed. The well had been there all along—beneath our feet—just waiting to be rediscovered.
"Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” — John 7:38 (ESV)
My journey in the garden revealed a profound spiritual truth: we sometimes go searching for answers, for breakthroughs, for peace—forgetting that the source of life is already within us.
I was tired. Struggling. Trying to make something thrive while carrying the burden in my own strength. I kept hoping for a miracle, thinking it would come from some grand external solution. But when I finally stopped and looked at what was already present—when I allowed others to help me dig deeper—I discovered what I needed had been there all along.
Spiritually, we do the same. We pray for God to show up, not realizing He already has. The Living Water—Jesus Christ—is in us, just waiting to be accessed. Sometimes the well is clogged with fear, past hurt, or self-doubt. But if we persist, if we dig again with faith, we will find that God is more than enough. He doesn't just meet our needs—He causes us to overflow.
Now, my garden thrives. And so does my soul—because I have learned to draw from the well that never runs dry.
Reflection Questions:
Are you searching for something externally that God has already placed within you?
What "dirt" might be blocking your spiritual well—worry, pride, disappointment?
Who can help you “flag” the well—identify and encourage the giftings, grace, or strength already in your life?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being my source. Thank You that Your Spirit lives in me and that I don’t have to search far and wide to find what You’ve already provided. Help me to uncover every gift, promise, and provision You’ve planted in my life. Clear out anything that clogs the flow of Your presence. Let me live refreshed, restored, and overflowing in Your grace. Amen.
Praise the Lord. I needed this.
