Life doesn’t always play fair. Storms show up without warning, plans fall apart, and sometimes, the people you counted on most are nowhere to be found. It’s in these moments that your faith gets tested, not when everything is calm, but when everything feels like it is falling apart. We can then share with the songwriter R. Kelso Carter that we are “Standing on the Promises.” But what promises do we hold on to in this time?
Job knew this kind of shaking. He lost everything—his wealth, his children, even his health. Friends accused him, and his wife told him to give up, yet he stood firm. Why? Because his faith wasn’t built on shifting circumstances, it was anchored in something more profound: the unchanging character of God.
In Job 27:5, we hear the cry of a man who, despite everything, refuses to let go of his integrity and his relationship with God. That’s rock-solid faith. It’s not denial. It’s not pretending everything’s okay. It’s looking life in the face, with all its pain and loss, and saying, “I’m not letting go of God.”
God allows things to go wrong to test and perfect our faith, which glorifies Him (1 Peter 1: 6 -8).
Having faith means that even though you don't see His hand working in your situation, you believe that He is there for you in the bad times as well as the good times. It means you will find your joy in Him no matter what is happening.
When Jesus was in the boat with His disciples, they forgot who He really was. They became fearful that they would die. If you are in the middle of a raging storm in your life, remember who is in the boat with you, and you have to remember to worship and praise Him for all that He is.
When you wake up in the middle of the night with fearful thoughts swirling around you, remember who is with you. Recognize that your help is in Him; all you need to do is call out His name and praise Him in the midst of it. 1 Peter 5:8-9 reminds us to “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him and stand firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings”
Faith means that no matter what you are going through, you will believe in God's goodness, righteousness, and love. Faith means you can say, as Job did, Though He slay me yet will I trust Him (Job 13:14). In other words, even if He lets me die, He is still my salvation, and I will live with Him for eternity.
Times of trials are full of suffering, trouble, distress, affliction, misery, or pain. God says during those times we are supposed to count it all joy because the testing of your faith produces patience. James 1:2-3. One of the things that patience work on in us is that it gets rid of pride. When we become prideful, our hearts are full of ourselves and not of God. We focus on us and not on Him. We want it now and not later. God allows us to go through difficult times in order to break us of our pride in thinking we can make life work on our own. Time forces us to stop looking to anything or anyone else but Him for our help.
Reflection Questions:
- What has been shaking your faith lately?
- Are you trying to hold it together on your own, or are you leaning into God as your rock?
- What truth about God can you hold onto today that doesn’t change, even when everything else does?
Prayer:
God, when life shakes me, help me to stand firm like Job. Even when I don’t understand, remind me that You are still good, still present, and still holding me. Strengthen my faith so that it’s not dependent on what I see but rooted in who You are. Be my rock when everything else is unsteady. Lord, I praise Your name. I exalt You above all things, You are my king and Lord. In the midst of everything that is happening in my life and all that I am going through, I know that You are the all-powerful God of the universe. Lord, I praise You as my almighty deliverer. You have the power to set me free and transform my life. You will break down every wall that separates me from you. I know that You, Lord, have begun a good work in me, and You will complete it. I know that whatever state I am in, I can be content because You have promised that You will never leave me nor forsake me. I trust that You will to work things out for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Amen! Thank you for that reminder of Faith, we just need to trust and believe in Father God!
