August 20: Safe in His Strong Tower

 Safe in His Strong Tower

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Proverbs 18:10

Standing at 2,722 feet tall, in the city of Dubai, we find the tallest tower in the world, the Burj Khalifa.

This tower has 163 floors. I have never been to this tower, but I can imagine its magnificence. Other similar towers, such as Tokyo Skytree and Shanghai Tower, stand tall as major attractions.

Whenever I hear about a possible flooding or a tsunami threat, my mind goes racing to these towers. Amid a disaster, their beauty fades, and their ability to provide a place of refuge becomes a primary focus. On the top floor of Burj Khalifa, I imagine I would not be worried about a potential flooding or tsunami.

But here is the problem. I don't live near any of these towers. If there is an impending disaster, I need to find the funds to travel to the country where the tower is. Then I need to have a reservation to gain access. By the time all the logistics are worked out, I would no doubt be swallowed up by the raging waters.

Here is another problem. I know some of us are afraid of heights. We would never go to the top of Burj Khalifa.

Remember the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center? The Twin Towers were an incredible attraction. But as beautiful as these buildings were, on September 11, 2001, they could not provide safety for those inside.

The bible tells us about a tower that you and I can have access to. A tower where fear ceases to exist. Terrorists or suicide bombers cannot overtake this tower. This tower is a safe place for the righteous.

I don't need money to access it. I don't need to book a flight. I don't even need a reservation. I access it by calling a name. A name that is above all names.

It is not one of the names that we would struggle to pronounce. It's simply the name of Jesus.

So, when the storms rage, shout Jesus.

When the floods try to overtake you, shout Jesus.

When the troubles of this life seem like they are rising against you, shout Jesus.

And when you are at your weakest and you don't have the strength to shout, just a whisper of the name Jesus will do.

Anywhere, anytime, in any and every situation - your strong tower is there waiting for you.

There is nothing too small for Him to handle, and there is nothing too big that He cannot manage.

When we call on His name, our safety is guaranteed.

Prayer

Oh Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth. You have assured us that when we call on Your name, You will be our strong tower. Lord, sometimes the waves of life seem more than we can bear. Please help us to find refuge in You. Thank You for being our Savior and our Lord. Amen.
