August 28: Come Rest in Me

Theme: Finding True Rest

Scripture: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

When was the last time you had a good rest? How would you describe that rest? For most of us, when someone asks about our wellbeing, our answer is often the same: “I’m tired.” Tired in body, tired in mind, tired in spirit.

But Jesus understands this exhaustion. He knows the burdens we carry—worries about family, health, finances, and the future. That’s why He extends a personal invitation: “Come to Me.” Notice He doesn’t tell us to keep pushing through or to ignore our weariness. He simply calls us closer to Himself.

Martha in the Bible knew that feeling. In Luke 10:38–42, she was “worried and troubled about many things” while her sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. Martha’s busyness wore her down, and in her frustration, she even asked Jesus to make Mary help her. But Jesus gently reminded her that only one thing was truly needed—to rest in His presence.

Like Martha, we can become consumed with the endless tasks and cares of life. But Jesus’ invitation in Matthew 11:28 is still the same: “Come to Me.” Rest is not found in finishing every task or solving every problem—it is found in Him. He offers peace that no amount of striving can produce, and rest that renews us from the inside out.

True rest isn’t found in more sleep, a break from work, or even a change of scenery. Those things help, but they are temporary. The rest Jesus offers is deeper—it is rest for the soul. It is peace that quiets our fears, assurance that we are loved, and strength to face tomorrow with hope.

Today, instead of letting weariness control your spirit, take a moment to sit at the feet of Jesus, just like Mary did. He promises that in Him, you will find true rest.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is the greatest source of weariness in your life right now?
  2. In what ways do you relate to Martha’s weariness?
  3. What step can you take today to respond to His invitation to “Come”?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I come to You weary and burdened. Thank You for inviting me into Your rest. Teach me to trust You with what I cannot carry. Quiet my anxious heart, refresh my weary soul, and let me find peace in Your presence today. Amen.
