Being still is something we all struggle with. How can I be still when the storm is raging? When I am being mistreated? When everything seems to be falling apart, and I feel like I am drowning? How can I remain still in moments like these?
We are familiar with the story of Jesus and His disciples on the boat. In the middle of a fierce storm, while waves crashed and threatened to sink them, Jesus was asleep. In panic, the disciples cried out, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38). Jesus rose and rebuked the wind and the waves, and the storm obeyed. But what stands out most is His rebuke to the disciples: “Where is your faith?”
I, too, have had my own moments like that when the cares of life overwhelmed me, and it felt as though God was silent, as if He were asleep while I was sinking. But in that place of fear, God gently reminded me of His word in Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” I was brought to tears as He reassured me of His power and His presence.
Even though I am still waiting for the waves and winds in my life to fully subside, I have the unshakable assurance that God is not sleeping. He is with me. He has already worked things out according to His perfect plan.
Let us remember that God is in control. Because of that truth, we can choose to be still and trust Him. Nothing is impossible with Him. We can rest in quiet confidence, knowing that even if we don’t receive everything we hope for in this life, eternity with Him is our most significant promise and reward.
Prayer
Dear Jesus,
Please forgive me for the times I have failed to trust You. Teach me to be still and to remember that You are always with me. You have power over every storm, and nothing is beyond Your control. I place my life in Your hands and choose to trust You completely.
Amen.
Amen 🙏
