November 22: Brotherhood

Building Brotherhood in the Church

Proverbs 27:17 “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”

Sharon Campbell-Danvers

In many churches, women naturally form friendships and support circles with ease. Their sense of connection often feels immediate, warm, and flowing. But for men, the process of bonding can look different. It is slower, quieter, and sometimes more guarded. Yet when men do form deep friendships, those bonds are often strong, loyal, and lifelong.

More than 20 years ago, my husband introduced me to his best friend. They met while studying at Northern Caribbean University, both preparing for ministry. They endured challenges together, encouraged each other through long nights of study, and supported one another through the highs and lows of their calling. Their friendship was forged in the fires of shared struggle and strengthened by their shared faith.

Years later, his best friend made a surprising decision. He entered politics. It was an unexpected shift that could have created distance or discomfort. But instead of weakening their bond, it strengthened it. My husband continued to stand by him, pray for him, and ask God to use him in his new sphere of influence. Their friendship became a testimony of what true brotherhood looks like: loyalty, prayer, respect, and a commitment to sharpening each other even when life takes them down different paths.

This is the beauty of godly brotherhood. Like iron sharpening iron, men need other men who challenge them, support them, pray for them, and hold them accountable. Brotherhood is not always formed quickly, but it is formed intentionally and often during seasons of vulnerability, hardship, or purpose.

Reflection Questions

  1. What meaningful male friendships has God placed in your life, and how can you strengthen them?

  2. Are there men in your church or community who may need support, encouragement, or prayer?

  3. How can you be intentional about building a godly brotherhood around you?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of brotherhood. Strengthen the bonds among the men in our church, our families, and our communities. Help them sharpen one another in faith, character, and purpose. Raise up strong, godly friendships that bring You glory and support men in every season of life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
