November 25: Gentle Giants
Gentle Giants
Key Text: Exodus 18 verse 22
They will help you carry the burden so that the work will be lighter for you.
When Moses first stepped into leadership he tried to manage everything alone. The needs of the people were great, and the responsibilities of ministry were heavy. Soon he became overwhelmed. But God provided wisdom. Through the counsel of Jethro, Moses was reminded that leadership was never meant to be carried by one person. God instructed him to appoint faithful men who would stand with him and help bear the load.
This principle still guides the church today. God created a structure that invites collaboration and shared responsibility. The work of Redemption is too significant for any one person to do alone. Yet within this structure there is a group of leaders whose silent strength often goes unnoticed. Their dedication is deep, their service is steady, and their commitment reflects the heart of Christ.
I speak of the Assistant Pastors. In other words, the First Elders.
These leaders are the gentle giants of our congregations. They support the Pastor with humility. They keep the church grounded even when the Pastor is away. They preach, teach, visit, counsel, encourage, and sometimes carry the emotional weight of the church family. Their leadership is not loud, but it is loyal. It is not flashy, but it is faithful.
Their ministry echoes the spirit of Aaron and Hur who stood beside Moses and held up his hands when he grew tired. Exodus 17 verse 12 tells us that when they supported him, the people prevailed. In the same way, First Elders help uphold the arms of the Pastor so that the ministry can flourish.
Their service also reflects the example of Jesus who reminded His disciples in Matthew 20 verse 26 that true greatness is found in serving others. These gentle giants embody quiet greatness. They lead by lifting. They guide by serving. They strengthen the church by being present, prayerful, and dependable.
Today let us pause and recognise the work of these humble leaders. Let us thank God for their commitment. Let us pray for their strength. And let us appreciate the way they reflect Christ through their service.
