November 5: The Avocado Story Part 1

During the 2025 avocado season, I was gardening and had placed three containers with mulch close to my plants. I knew they were almost in the walkway and could be an obstacle, but I left them there, deciding they could break down into compost.

One morning, about a week later, I walked outside and saw a huge avocado resting comfortably, nestled right into the mulch. It had not fallen to the hard ground. It was not bruised, damaged, or wasted. It was cushioned, preserved, and kept.

I immediately called my husband, Kevin, to see it. His first words were, “That sounds like a sermon.”

And indeed, the Spirit began to show me the spiritual picture: just as that avocado was cushioned, so God cushions us when we fall.

1. God Knows Our Weakness Beforehand

The truth is, God already knows that we will stumble at times. He knows the weight of life, the struggles, and the obstacles that lie ahead of us.

Jesus told Peter in Luke 22:32:
“But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

Even before Peter denied Him, Jesus knew and had already prayed for Peter’s restoration.

2. God Makes Preparations Ahead of Time

Just as the mulch was already in place before the avocado fell, God makes provision before our struggles even appear.

Deuteronomy 31:8:
“The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Nothing surprises Him. He has already positioned the right people, the right word, the right opportunities, and the right resources to sustain you when you fall.

3. When We Fall, His Grace Cushions Us

Falling is not the end. Failure is not final. Just like the avocado did not spoil because it landed on the mulch, you do not have to be destroyed by your stumble.

2 Corinthians 4:9 reminds us:
“We are persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”

Micah 7:8 declares:
“Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.”

God’s grace is that cushion. It absorbs the weight of our fall and holds us until we can rise again.

4. Restoration is Part of God’s Plan

The avocado was not left in the mulch forever; it could be picked up, washed, and enjoyed. In the same way, God not only cushions us in our fall, but He also lifts us up, restores us, and uses us again.

Psalm 37:24 says:
“Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand.”

1 Peter 5:10:
“And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

God’s plan is not to leave you fallen, but to raise you up stronger than before.

Practical Application

If you feel like you have fallen spiritually, emotionally, or even in your relationships, know this: God already prepared the cushion of grace. You are not destroyed.

When you look back at difficult seasons, you will realize that God had already set up help before you even knew you would need it.

Trust Him today. Do not fear failure. Do not let shame paralyze you. God has gone ahead of you.

Closing Reflection

That avocado taught me something powerful: God does not wait for us to fall before He acts. He goes before us. He surrounds us. He cushions us.

So, at the appointed time, when you do fall, you will fall right into the arms of grace. And that grace will hold you until you rise again.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You that You see my weakness before I even stumble. Thank You for going before me and making provision. Thank You that when I fall, I am not destroyed, because Your grace is my cushion. Help me to trust that You are always ahead of me, preparing the way.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
