December 29: What Am I Carrying That God Never Asked Me to Hold?

What Am I Carrying That God Never Asked Me to Hold?

Scripture
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28–30

Life has a way of placing weight on our souls. Over time, we begin to carry burdens that were never assigned to us by God—guilt from past mistakes, fear of the unknown, unrealistic expectations, and the pressure to hold everything together. What began as concern slowly becomes heaviness, and our hearts grow weary.

Jesus extends a simple yet powerful invitation: Come. Not after you fix everything. Not when you feel strong enough. But exactly as you are—tired, overwhelmed, and burdened. He does not ask us to ignore our pain; He asks us to bring it to Him.

Often, the reason we feel exhausted is not because God has given us too much to carry, but because we have taken on what He never intended us to hold. Control, comparison, regret, and fear quietly settle into our hearts, crowding out peace and trust. Yet Jesus offers an exchange—our heavy burdens for His rest.

Releasing what God never asked us to carry requires humility and faith. It means acknowledging that we are not meant to live self-sufficient lives, but dependent ones. When we lay our burdens at His feet, we make room for freedom, healing, and renewed strength.

As you reflect, ask yourself honestly: What am I holding onto that God has already asked me to surrender? What would it look like to trust Him fully with it today?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I come to You weary and burdened. Show me what I am carrying that You never asked me to hold. Give me the courage to release it into Your hands. Teach me to walk in trust, humility, and rest. I receive Your peace and Your promise of freedom. In Your name, Amen.
