January 11: Choosing Faith Over Fear

Choosing Faith Over Fear

Isaiah 41:10
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”

How many times have you hesitated from attempting a task because you were not quite sure how it would turn out? Maybe you had an unpleasant feeling that the outcome would not be good. Perhaps you were afraid of criticism, ridicule, or even failure. The grip of fear—whether experienced at intervals or over a prolonged period—can cripple our plans and distort our dreams.

I recently attended a health presentation at church entitled “Overcoming Anxiety and Fear Through Prayer.” The speaker shared the story of a young woman who suffered from anxiety and lived in fear for many years. She was afraid to drive, afraid of sleeping alone, and even afraid to go out except to go to work. Eventually, through prayer, claiming God’s promises found in the Bible, and receiving moral support from family and friends, she was able to overcome her anxiety.

What is it that makes you anxious or fearful? As we embark on this new year, do you want to chart a new career path? Is it your desire to start a business or buy a new house? Are you aiming for higher educational pursuits? Philippians 4:6 reminds us that we should be anxious for nothing, but in everything, through prayer and supplication, we should let our requests be made known to God.

In 1 Samuel 17:8–51, we find a powerful story of how faith can conquer fear. The Israelite army, under the leadership of King Saul, was being challenged and threatened by a Philistine giant soldier named Goliath. He demanded that one soldier from Israel’s army face him in battle. King Saul and all the other soldiers were dismayed and afraid when Goliath spoke.

Yet, young David, who had come to bring food for his brothers, heard Goliath defying the armies of the living God—and he was not pleased. Although David was only a youth, he believed that God would give him victory over this uncircumcised Philistine. Without military armor, sword, or shield, David defeated Goliath. What did he use? A stone, a sling, and unwavering faith in a God who delivers and keeps His promises.

Are you faced with a Goliath today? Do not be intimidated by the obstacles of giants. David’s God is still available. He will be your strength and your shield. Give Him your fears, and you will be victorious.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for reminding us that You are always with us. When fear tries to overwhelm us, help us to choose faith instead. Strengthen our hearts, calm our minds, and teach us to trust You completely. We place our fears in Your hands and walk forward in confidence, knowing You will uphold us.

Amen.
