January 24 -Strengthened in the Secret Place

Key Text:

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” — Matthew 6:6

When Gavin and I started dating, we spent hours talking. We met at the University of Technology—he lived on campus, and I commuted from home for classes. During holiday breaks, when school was not in session, we would spend hours on the phone. It was during this time that we both got our first cell phones—a flip phone for me and a Nokia 3310 for him. That’s when we talked even more. Sometimes, I would fall asleep while still on the call!

The transition to mobile phones meant we no longer had to talk in the public space of the living room where our parents’ landline was. Now, we could talk freely, share our hearts, and connect deeply without distractions—as long as we had credit.

Jesus invites us into that same kind of conversation with Him—as often as we need and for as long as we want. No credit required. No mobile device necessary. You were designed with a built-in communication system. While the mouth is often the most used device, the deepest and most intimate communication comes from the heart. Heart communication is so powerful it can activate the tear ducts—and tears are a language Jesus understands.

Of course, Gavin and I enjoyed talking on the landline, but the conversations in the privacy of our rooms—where we could say what we truly wanted—were the ones that made us connect deeply.

God calls us to that same kind of private conversation. He says, “Go into your room.” The place doesn’t matter—just get away and find a space. It could be your bedroom, bathroom, closet, or anywhere you can be alone. Then He adds, “Close the door.” In other words, shut out distractions. It’s our private time. And then He says, “Let’s talk.”

For me, the best time for this undisturbed quiet time is early in the morning. You may find another time that works for you, but I guarantee your relationship with Jesus will grow if you make this time a priority.

The secret place is where strength is renewed, peace is restored, and hearts are aligned with His will. Make it your daily habit to meet Him there.

Prayer

Father, thank You for inviting me into the secret place where I can know You more deeply. Help me to prioritize time with You, shutting out distractions and opening my heart fully. Teach me to listen, to speak honestly, and to rest in Your presence. Strengthen me in these quiet moments so that I can walk boldly in Your will today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
