January 26: “The Missing Hose”

 Theme: Empowered for Purpose

Acts 1:8 (KJV) “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

I once had a car that I truly loved. My silver Honda was so faithful that I called her Betsy. When I went on vacation, I loaned her to a friend. A few days later, she called and said Betsy was not moving as fast as she should. Eventually, she had to park her.

When I returned, I was told Betsy needed a specific part. It took months for that part to arrive in the Cayman Islands. Betsy was parked under the ackee tree for protection, unable to move. She had oil and all the other parts, but she was missing one small hose. When the part finally arrived, life was restored to my beloved car, and she began to drive again with full power.

That story reflects the true essence of this Bible verse. Receiving that missing part is like us receiving the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8 tells us that when the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we receive power. Without Him, we may look fine on the outside, but we cannot move in the way God has called us to.

Could it be that sometimes we are not effective witnesses because we have not truly received or yielded to the Holy Spirit? This is something worth pondering. God desires for us to be His witnesses every day, not in our own strength, but through His power working within us.

This verse reminds us that God empowers His people through the Holy Spirit so they can live boldly, serve faithfully, and share Christ wherever they are. The power we receive is not just for ourselves. It is to fulfill God’s purpose in our lives and to reach others with His love.

Reflection

What hose might be missing in your own spiritual life? What is preventing the full flow of the Holy Spirit’s power within you? Is it fear, unforgiveness, distraction, pride, or simply a lack of time spent with God?

Just like Betsy had everything she needed except one small but vital part, we too can look complete on the outside while something essential is missing on the inside. The Holy Spirit cannot move freely where there is resistance, neglect, or unresolved sin.

Take a moment today to ask God to reveal anything that may be blocking His work in your life. Surrender it to Him. When the Spirit is allowed to flow, He restores power, purpose, and movement. And when we are fully connected to Him, we become the witnesses God has called us to be.

Prayer
Holy Spirit, search my heart and remove anything that is blocking Your flow in my life. Fill me afresh with Your power so I can live and witness for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
