March 11: Growing Through the Process
Arlene Johnson McLeod
Scripture: James 1:4
“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” — James 1:4 (NIV)
Growth is rarely comfortable.
As women, we often find ourselves in seasons we didn’t choose—waiting seasons, stretching seasons, refining seasons. We pray for strength, yet God allows situations that require it. We ask for patience, and suddenly everything tests it. We desire maturity, but growth comes through process.
James gives us a powerful reminder- here goes…perseverance has a purpose.
The word “let” in this verse is important. It means we have a choice. We can resist the process—complain, withdraw, harden our hearts—or we can allow God to use it to shape us.
Think of how a pearl is formed. It begins with irritation inside an oyster. Layer by layer, something beautiful forms from something uncomfortable. In the same way, God uses the irritations, delays, disappointments, and unexpected detours in our lives to produce spiritual maturity.
That difficult coworker.
That strained relationship.
That health challenge.
That unanswered prayer.
That church sister or brother who is always upsetting you.
None of it is wasted.
God is developing endurance in you. And endurance produces depth, wisdom, compassion, and strength that cannot be formed any other way.
Sister, you are not stuck—you are being shaped!
The process may feel slow. It may even feel unfair. But the promise is clear: when perseverance finishes its work, you will be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
God is more interested in your growth than your comfort.
And growth always comes through process.
Today, choose to trust that God is working beneath the surface. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening?” try asking, “Lord, what are You growing in me?”
The process you’re struggling with today may be the very thing God is using to strengthen you for tomorrow.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for walking with me through every season. When I feel stretched or uncertain, help me trust that You are working all things for my growth and Your glory. Strengthen my faith, steady my heart, and guide my steps each day.
Teach me to lean on You, to seek You earnestly, and to rest in Your perfect plan. May my life reflect Your grace and love in all I do.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Such a wonderful reminder.
