March 23: Let Your Light Break Forth

By: Arlene McLeod

Key Text: “Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.” — Isaiah 58:8 (NIV)

There is something deeply personal about light. It reveals, restores, and guides. In Isaiah 58, God is speaking to His people about a life that goes beyond outward religion—a life marked by compassion, justice, humility, and genuine devotion. When a woman walks in this kind of surrendered obedience, God makes a breathtaking promise: your light will break forth like the dawn.

Notice the imagery of the dawn. Dawn does not rush, yet it is unstoppable. It begins in darkness, almost unnoticed, until suddenly the sky is filled with light. In the same way, God’s work in your life may feel slow or hidden—but it is steady and certain. What He is forming in you will be revealed in His perfect time.

This light is not something you manufacture. It is the result of a life aligned with God—loving others, walking humbly, and trusting Him even when no one is watching.

Consider the woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:25–34). For twelve long years, she lived in isolation, weakness, and quiet suffering. She was unseen, overlooked, and likely forgotten by society. Yet she carried a bold, persistent faith: “If I just touch His garment, I will be healed.” In a single moment of courage, her light broke forth. Not only was she physically healed, but Jesus called her “Daughter,” restoring her identity and dignity. What had been hidden for years was suddenly transformed into a testimony of faith and healing.

Then reflect on Ruth, a woman who chose faithfulness in the midst of loss. Widowed and uncertain of her future, she made the courageous decision to stay with Naomi and trust in God. Ruth’s daily life likely felt ordinary—gleaning in fields, serving quietly—but her obedience positioned her for divine favor. Her light broke forth not in a single dramatic moment, but through consistent faithfulness. God wove her story into a greater purpose, making her part of the lineage of Jesus.

And we cannot overlook Deborah, a leader, prophetess, and judge (Judges 4–5). In a time when leadership was scarce and fear was widespread, Deborah rose with wisdom and boldness. She did not shrink back from her calling. Her light broke forth as she led with clarity, courage, and trust in God’s direction. Through her, God brought victory and peace to His people.

Each of these women experienced seasons of obscurity, challenge, or waiting. Yet their light was not extinguished—it was being prepared.

Isaiah 58:8 also speaks of healing appearing quickly. Sometimes we think of healing only in physical terms, but God’s healing touches every part of us—our hearts, our past wounds, our disappointments, and our fears. As your light breaks forth, healing follows. The places where you once felt broken can become places of strength and testimony.

And then comes this powerful assurance: “the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.” This means God not only goes before you—He protects you from behind. You are surrounded by His presence. You do not have to strive to defend yourself or prove your worth. God Himself covers you.

So what does it look like to live this out?

It looks like choosing kindness when it’s easier to withdraw.
It looks like forgiving when your heart still aches.
It looks like trusting God’s timing when your prayers feel delayed.
It looks like continuing to show up, love, serve, and believe—even in the quiet.

Your light is breaking forth, even now.

Reflection
What areas of your life feel like “darkness” or waiting seasons?
How might God be forming something in you that is not yet visible?
In what ways can you live out compassion, humility, and faith right where you are?
Do you believe that your story—like Ruth’s, Deborah’s, or the healed woman’s—has purpose beyond what you can see?

Prayer
Gracious Father,
Thank You for being the source of my light. When I feel hidden or discouraged, remind me that You are always at work within me. Help me to walk in obedience, to love others with sincerity, and to trust You in every season. Heal the places in my heart that feel weary or wounded, and let Your restoration flow through my life. Teach me to shine—not for recognition, but for Your glory.
Go before me, Lord, and be my rear guard. Surround me with Your presence and guide my steps each day. I trust that in Your perfect time, my light will break forth like the dawn.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
