April 10: Island Winds, Holy Spirit Move
by Dr. Terry-Ann Robinson
Key Text - “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judæa, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:8 KJV
During the Easter season in the Caribbean, the skies come alive. Children, parents, and friends gather in open fields and along hillsides, flying kites of every color, shape, and size. I remember stopping by the St. Ann Kite Festival in Jamaica and being struck by the beauty—kites dancing effortlessly across the sky while onlookers watched in awe. Just when you think you have seen the most beautiful kite then there appears another one.
A kite, no matter how beautifully made, cannot rise on its own. It depends entirely on the wind's power. When the wind is steady, the kite soars higher and remains stable. The tension on the string, guided by the hands of the flyer, keeps the kite from drifting away or crashing to the ground. Without the wind, the kite is lifeless; without guidance, it is uncontrolled.
After Jesus’ resurrection, He told His disciples that He would be leaving them—but not alone. He promised the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Just as the wind gives power to the kite, the Holy Spirit empowers our lives. The Spirit lifts us to new heights in our relationship with Christ, enabling us to live beyond our own strength and limitations.
The Holy Spirit also keeps us steady when life’s pressures threaten to pull us down. In moments of uncertainty, fear, or temptation, He provides balance and direction. Like the tension on the kite’s string, the Spirit helps us remain under God’s loving control—not restricted, but guided with purpose.
Today, may we yield ourselves to the Island Winds of God’s Spirit. Let Him fill our sails, steady our walk, and lift our witness so that we may carry the message of Christ—from where we are, to the ends of the earth. May those around you see you flying high, the banner of King Jesus.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, breathe afresh on my life. Lift me higher than my fears, steady me when trials come, and help me remain joyfully under Your guidance. Use me as a witness for Christ, wherever You have placed me. Amen.
