April 11: Harbour of Rest

by: Tamelia Barriffe

Key Text: Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew

11:28

Sometimes we become so focused on the current behavior that we never stop to consider

the root behind it.

We correct. We respond. We react.

But we do not always pause to ask:

“What is driving this?”

Many of us, in painful moments, look for reassurance. We want something to ease the

discomfort quickly.

“It won’t happen again.”

“Do you still care?”

“Can we fix this?”

But reassurance often lives at the surface and healing begins much deeper.

Take for example a situation where trust is broken in a relationship.

The husband confesses. He apologizes. He explains what he did, his actions, his choices,

where he went.He expresses regret. But the wife’s focus is not on reassurance.

She is not asking for comfort or quick answers.

She is not even centered on replaying the event itself. Instead, she leans into a deeper

question:

“What led you here?” “What was happening within you before this decision was made?”

Because she understands something powerful—

that behavior does not stand alone. As those questions are explored, what was hidden

begins to surface: patterns of avoidance, internal struggles, disconnection, ways of coping

that were never addressed.

Not to excuse what was done, but to ensure it is truly understood.

And from that place, a different kind of healing begins. One that requires not just apology,

but personal reflection, accountability, and even guidance.

Or consider a parent who finds themselves shouting at their child repeatedly. The focus

may become the behavior:

“I need to stop yelling.”

“I need more patience.”

But the deeper question is:

“What is happening within me that leads to this?” Is it exhaustion? Feeling overwhelmed?

Lack of support? Unprocessed frustration?

When we focus only on behavior, we manage the moment. But when we understand the

root, we create the opportunity for real change.

This kind of deeper work is not easy. It requires honesty, reflection, and sometimes help.

But here is where everything comes together.

Understanding the root is important, but it is not enough on its own.

We can identify the pattern. We can explain the behavior. We can even see clearly what

led to it and still struggle to change it.

Using the parent example, the parent might recognize she is overwhelmed and carrying

too much. Husband and wife might recognize that husband is dealing with internal

struggle.

The awareness matters, but it does not always stop the reaction in the next moment.

Because insight alone does not transform the heart.

This is why we need Jesus.

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew

11:28).

Jesus does not only invite us to understand ourselves. He invites us to bring what we

uncover to Him. Because the roots we discover often carry weight: habits we cannot

break, temptation we struggle with, wounds we cannot heal on our own, patterns that feel

stronger than our will. Thus, without Him, we may become more aware, but still remain

burdened.

Christ offers something deeper than awareness. He offers restoration. A harbour is not

just a place where you realize you are in a storm. It is where the storm no longer has

control.

So yes, we ask the deeper questions. Yes, we seek to understand the root. But we do not

stop there. We bring it to Jesus, because He is not only the revealer of truth, He is the

healer of it.

Reflection

● Am I focusing more on behavior than understanding the root?

● What situation in my life requires me to ask a deeper question?

● What might God be inviting me to bring to Him beneath the surface?

Prayer

Lord, help me to look beyond what I see on the surface.Give me the courage to ask deeper

questions, even when it is uncomfortable. Teach me not to settle for temporary

reassurance, but to seek true healing.

Where there are hidden patterns, reveal them. Where there are wounds, begin Your

restoration. I bring You not just what I’ve done, but everything that led me there.

Give me Your rest . A rest that heals from the inside out.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
