April 15: Forgiveness Keeps Coming Back to Me

Forgive From the Heart

Key Text: Matthew 18:21–22 (KJV)
“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.”

How many of us wrestle with forgiveness? If we are honest, it is not always easy. If it were not for the grace we have received from God, many of us would struggle even more to forgive others. There are moments when the heart agrees that forgiveness is right, yet still struggles with how to truly let go when the hurt runs deep.

Forgiveness has a way of coming back again and again. Just when it seems the issue has been settled, the memory resurfaces, the feeling returns, and the wound feels fresh. In those moments, it becomes clear that forgiveness is not always a one-time act. Sometimes it is a daily decision, a continual surrender.

When reflecting on what Jesus endured on His journey to the cross, it humbles the heart. He experienced betrayal, rejection, pain, and suffering, yet He still chose to forgive. That example shifts perspective. It reminds us that forgiveness is not based on what others deserve, but on the grace we have received.

Peter’s question was honest and deeply human. How many times should forgiveness be extended? Jesus’ response reveals that forgiveness is not about counting offenses. It is about cultivating a heart that remains open, surrendered, and free.

When forgiveness comes back, it is an invitation. An invitation to release again. To trust again. To choose freedom again.

When we forgive from the heart, we are choosing:

  • Freedom over bondage
  • Peace over bitterness
  • Healing over resentment
  • Obedience over pride

Forgiveness does not excuse the wrong, and it does not minimize the pain. Instead, it releases the burden from the heart. It allows God to handle what we were never meant to carry.

Each time forgiveness returns, it is another opportunity for growth. Another step toward spiritual maturity. Another moment where God reshapes the heart.

Forgiveness is not about them.
It is about what God is doing within.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the mercy You have shown me. Help me to forgive as You have forgiven me. Heal the places in my heart that still hurt and give me the strength to release every offense into Your hands. Teach me to forgive from the heart, not just with my words. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
