April 17: Island Light: Shine wherever you go
by
Key Text: In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
I love having the window seat on an airplane. No matter how often I travel, I am always in awe as I look out and marvel at the wonders of God’s beautiful creation. The heavens truly declare His glory, and the firmament shows His handiwork.
Although I am not a fan of traveling at night, there are times when it cannot be avoided. If you take the time out to observe, you can be flying over a vast, dark sea, and everything below appears silent and unseen. But as soon as an island comes into view, its lights are visible from a great distance.
Even though all around is darkness, the island cannot be hidden. White and yellow lights glow steadily, while reds and other colors shine from signage, towers, and buildings. Together, they form a beautiful and unmistakable scene. The small points of light announce life, presence, and direction to anxious airplane travelers.
We live in a dark world. Darkness often feels overwhelming, stretching as far as the eye can see. Yet God has called each of us to be light. Not a floodlight that blinds, but a steady, faithful glow that points others to hope, truth, and love.
So let us ask ourselves:
Can my light be seen?
Am I shining consistently, even when surrounded by darkness?
And most importantly—whose light am I shining?
When our lives reflect Christ, our light does not draw attention to ourselves. Instead, it guides others to glorify our Father in heaven.
Reflection
Where has God placed you to be a light right now?
Are there areas where fear, fatigue, or distraction have dimmed your light?
How can your actions today point someone toward God’s glory?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling us out of darkness and into Your marvelous light. We are grateful for the privilege of reflecting Your love, grace, and truth in a world that so desperately needs hope. Help us to shine faithfully wherever You place us—at home, at work, in our communities, and in every space we enter.
When we feel surrounded by darkness or tempted to dim our light, remind us that the light we carry comes from You. Cleanse our hearts, align our actions with Your will, and let our words and deeds point others to Your glory. May those who see us see You, and may our lives bring honor to Your name.
Strengthen us to shine with humility, courage, and love each day.In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
