May 25: THE ROCK THAT FOLLOWS

by Angela Hall

Scripture for Today:

“For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 10:4

Devotional Reading

There are seasons in life when the ground beneath us feels unsteady when plans shift, support disappears, and the future becomes uncertain. Yet Paul reminds us that Israel was sustained by a spiritual Rock that followed them. Not a rock they had to chase. Not a rock that stayed behind. A Rock that moved with them, faithful, steady and unchanging. That Rock is Christ.

He is not only the foundation beneath our feet; He is the Presence that walks behind us, beside us, and before us.

I learned this truth early in life. During my college years, I had the dream, the acceptance letter, and determination but not the money. There were days when my bank account was empty, my meal plan was gone, and my textbooks felt heavier than I hoped. But I had something priceless: a praying mother.

While I tried to stretch five dollars into a week of meals, she was on her knees calling my name before God. While I stressed over tuition deadlines, she whispered, “Lord, you promised to supply all her needs.” And God did. A scholarship here. A kind stranger there. A professor who extended grace. A friend who shared groceries. Provision flowed from unexpected places.

But the journey didn’t get easier after college. Life became more demanding. The salary was small, the student loan was large, and the responsibilities grew heavier. And still, my mother prayed. She prayed when I was too tired to pray. She prayed when I didn’t know what to ask for. She prayed when I didn’t have the strength to stand.

Then she passed.

And I cried, not only because I missed her, but because I wondered, who would pray for me now? Who will call my name before the Rock? Who will stand in the gap when I feel too weak to pray? There were days when I felt as if the Rock Himself could not hear me. Days when my prayers felt small, thin, and lost.

But the Word reminded me:
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

The Rock had not moved.
The Rock had not stopped listening.
The Rock had not stopped following me.

My mother’s prayers did not die with her; they had already reached Heaven. And Heaven does not forget. The same Rock she trusted is the Rock who now holds me. The Rock who hears me. The Rock who carries me.

Maybe you, too, have lost someone who prayed for you. Maybe you feel the weight of life pressing hard. Maybe you wonder if God still hears your voice. He does.

The Rock who followed Israel…
The Rock who followed me through college…
The Rock who followed me through grief…
is the Rock who follows you today.

He is steady when life is shaky.
He is strong when you feel weak.
He is present when you feel alone.
He is listening even when you feel unheard.

Jesus is your Rock—yesterday, today, and forever.

Reflection

Take a quiet moment today to sit with your own story. Think about the places in your life where the ground has shifted beneath your feet—those seasons when you felt stretched, overwhelmed, or unseen. Where did you most need Jesus to be your Rock?

Consider these questions:

  • Where am I feeling the weight of life right now?
Is it financial pressure, emotional exhaustion, grief, loneliness, or uncertainty?

  • Which part of my journey feels like a wilderness?
The Israelites didn’t always understand where they were going, but the Rock followed them anyway.

  • Whose prayers carried me in the past—and how is God carrying me now?
Even if they are no longer here, their prayers did not vanish. Heaven still holds them.

  • Where do I need to trust that Jesus hears me, even when I feel unheard?
Feelings are real, but they are not final. The Rock does not move.

  • What would it look like today to lean on Jesus instead of my own strength?
Not striving. Not pushing. Simply resting.

Write down one specific area where you need Jesus to be your Rock—your stability, your strength, your steady place. Speak it aloud to Him.

Let this truth settle in your heart: Even when the people who prayed for you are gone, the God who heard them is still listening to you.
Even when life feels heavy, the Rock who follows is still carrying you.
Even when you feel alone, the Presence that never leaves is still beside you.

You are held.
You are heard.
You are followed by the Rock.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for being my Rock—my strength, my shelter, and my steady place. When life feels overwhelming, remind me that You have not moved. When I feel unheard, remind me that You are listening. When I feel alone, remind me that You are near. Be the Rock beneath my feet and the Rock who follows me through every season.
Amen.

My sisters please make this be your takeaway from today’s devotional:

Jesus is the Rock who holds me, hears me, and never leaves me.
