May 9: Loving Others Without Losing Yourself

by: Camile Beckford-Johnson

Key Text: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Mark 12:31

Jesus’ command is simple, yet deeply layered: love others as yourself. That small phrase carries a powerful truth, healthy love for others is rooted in a healthy understanding of self. It is not a call to disappear, to overextend, or to tolerate harm in the name of kindness.

Too often, love is mistaken for endless sacrifice without wisdom. But biblical love is not the absence of boundaries; it is the presence of truth, discernment, and alignment with God’s design. Jesus Himself modeled this. He loved deeply, yet He withdrew from crowds, confronted wrongdoing, and never compromised His identity to please others.

Loving others does not mean accepting behaviors that diminish your peace, your purpose, or your values. It does not require silence in the face of disrespect or staying in spaces where your spirit is consistently drained. In fact, without boundaries, love can become distorted, turning into obligation, resentment, or even enabling harm.

When you honor your God-given identity, you are better positioned to love well. Boundaries are not walls of rejection; they are guardrails of wisdom. They protect your capacity to give from a place of wholeness rather than depletion.

To love as Christ calls us to love means:

  • Offering grace without abandoning truth
  • Showing compassion without tolerating harm
  • Giving generously without losing stewardship of yourself

You are not called to lose yourself in loving others, you are called to love from a place of strength, clarity, and purpose. When you understand who you are in God, you can love freely without fear of losing your footing.

Prayer:
Lord, teach me to love others with wisdom and balance. Help me to honor both Your command to love and Your design for my life. Give me the courage to set boundaries where needed and the grace to love without losing myself. Let my love reflect truth, strength, and Your heart. Teach me to discern and to apply your love to everyone as you desire. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
