May 31: Stepping Into June Rooted and Unshaken

Key Text: “The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and strengthen your bones; you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” Isaiah 58:11 (NKJV)

Oh, how confidently I relish the promises of Isaiah 58:11 when life is going well. Prayers are answered quickly, doors are opening, and peace comes naturally. In those seasons, the promise of being “like a watered garden” feels real and beautiful.

But how quickly that confidence can fade when the season of drought seems endless, and life becomes one battle after another. In those moments, prayers may feel unanswered as we face health struggles, heartbreak, loneliness, financial stress, or simply the exhaustion of carrying too much for too long with no relief in sight.

For many of us, it is during these seasons that holding firmly to the promises of God’s continual guidance and strength in Isaiah 58:11 becomes difficult. Yet maybe that is exactly when the promise matters most. God never said there would be no drought. He promised that in the drought, He would sustain us.

So how do we stay rooted and unshaken when life feels heavy? I submit three simple but powerful reminders.

1. Stay close to God even when you don’t feel strong.

We often overlook the fact that faith does not always look like confidence and certainty. Sometimes, faith simply looks like whispering, “Lord, help me through today.” God is not asking us to pretend that we are okay or that we have all the answers. He simply invites us to remain close to Him, even in our weakness.

As Psalm 73:26 (NKJV) reminds us, “My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”  Furthermore, Jesus lovingly invites us, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (NKJV)

2. Stop measuring God’s presence by immediate results.

In a world where happiness and joy often seem to be built on instant gratification, that mindset can quietly seep into our spiritual lives as well. We can begin to expect immediate answers, quick breakthroughs, and relief in our timing. Yet not every prayer is answered in the way or timeframe we hoped for.

Let us remember that what we often interpret as “God’s silence” does not mean abandonment. Often, God sustains us in ways we cannot yet see, strengthening us quietly as we wait. As 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV) reminds us, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Therefore, even when we cannot trace His hand, we can trust His heart.

3. Let your roots grow deeper, not bitter.

Romans 8:28 also reassures us that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” This does not mean that all things feel good or that every season will make sense to us in the moment. Drought seasons are painful. Loss, disappointment, waiting, and unanswered prayers can leave us feeling weary and shaken.

Nevertheless, being rooted and unshaken means trusting that even when life feels uncertain, God is still at work beneath the surface. Just as a tree's roots grow deeper during dry seasons in search of water, difficult seasons can deepen our dependence on God, strengthen our faith, and shape us in ways we may not immediately understand.

God’s “good” is not always found in removing the struggle immediately, but often in sustaining us through it, developing perseverance within us, and reminding us that our hope is anchored in Him rather than in changing circumstances.

A watered garden does not stay alive because there is never heat. It survives because it has a constant water supply. In the same way, when we truly believe that God is working all things together for good, we can remain rooted even in the drought, trusting that what feels like delay, silence, or hardship is never wasted in His hands. And perhaps the beauty of Isaiah 58:11 is not that we will never experience drought, but that even there, God promises will sustain us, guide us continually, and keep our souls from running dry.

Let us boldly step into June rooted and unshaken, not because life is perfect or free from hardship, but because our hope is anchored in God. Inevitably, there will be seasons of drought, waiting, and uncertainty, yet we must cling to the promise of Isaiah 58:11 that God’s sustaining presence never fails.

We must strive daily to draw close to God, trust Him beyond what we can immediately see, and allow our roots to grow deeper through difficult seasons. In doing so, we can stand firm even when life feels heavy, remembering always that God is still guiding, strengthening, and sustaining us beneath the surface.

So whatever June may bring, may we enter it with hearts grounded in faith, trusting that the God who has kept us before will continue to carry us forward. We are rooted not in circumstances, but in the unfailing promises of God, knowing that even in the drought, His waters will never fail.
