June 20: Faithfulness in Small Things

Faithful in Small Things

Luke 16:10

It was on Monday, 12 PM July 08, 1946, that my favorite person in the whole wide world decided to grace this earth with her presence.  She was small in stature, but in no time became a GIANT simply to survive.

57 years ago, she gave herself to God with her four small children.  As a garment factory worker, her spiritual pathway has been tested in small things: did not come to work on time, punched out the next day for the day before, did not fix the garment that was sewn badly, did not come back after lunch in time, and so many others, yet she did what was right in the sight of God and was faithful to Him, so He helped her to withstand these tests.

She loved doing small quiet acts of love such as: remembering her children’s favorite meals, checking in on their wellbeing, building a steady comforting presence for her daughters after the loss of their brothers, building a foundation of support, creating a safe haven for them to come to, being one of the biggest prayer mates and cheerleader for almost 50 years for her elder daughter after she left the church until she got re-baptized, returning God’s portion every month, even though not having worked for over twenty years.  Being a part of the morning prayer walk every morning from 4:30 AM since 2019, telling her children her honest opinion, even when it hurts, so that they can do better!

These are small things, but she remains faithful about them. One of the things I love about this lady is her humility.  How humble she is.  She is so humble that she works in the background for every event and prays that she will never be the center of attention, but God says in the parable for the talents that if we are faithful in small things, He will make us great in larger things.

It was Saint Mother Teresa who reminded us: "Be faithful in small things, because it is in them that your strength lies". But I will say, Mommy, just continue to be faithful in small things because it is in them God will reveal bigger things to you and make you ruler over them all.

Today, as we execute her 80th surprise birthday party, we know that she will be surprised by and upset with us for the “attention” that is now on her. As I consider the number of persons over the years whose special day never went unnoticed or forgotten by her, I am very happy to shine the spotlight on hers as she has been faithful in small things for others. Please pray that my Mom may live to see many, many more years, that I may be alive at the end of the day (smile) and when God comes, He may find her and all of us faithful in much because we were genuinely faithful in small things.

Luke 16:10 reminds us that “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much”.  What a promise! What a statement! What a guarantee!  God says it; I believe it and that settles it for me!

Let us all strive to be faithful in the small things that we believe nobody is noticing or even aware of, so that when He comes to give us the crown of glory, we will be ready to receive it, because that will be the “MUCH”!
