The Heart the King Will See

Scripture: 1 John 3:2–3 (KJV)

"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure."

There is something special about preparing to meet someone important. We take extra care with our appearance, making sure everything is clean, neat, and in order. We want to present ourselves well because the occasion matters.

As children, my siblings and I knew that if we were going to meet someone special or attend an important event, Mother would remind us to wash up, comb our hair, put on clean clothes, and make sure we looked presentable. She wasn't concerned only with how we looked; she was teaching us that respect is shown by preparation.

The same principle follows us into adulthood. As working professionals, whenever we know we have an important meeting, presentation, or interview, we prepare with care. We choose our best suit, polish our shoes, ensure our clothes are pressed, and pay attention to every detail because we want to make a good impression. We understand that preparation communicates respect, confidence, and readiness.

If we devote such care to meeting earthly employers, clients, or executives, how much more should we prepare to stand before the King of kings? People may notice the suit, the shoes, or the outward appearance, but God looks beyond what others can see. He examines the heart. He is looking for lives that have been cleansed by His grace, hearts that are surrendered to Him, and characters that reflect His holiness.

As Christians, we are preparing for the greatest meeting of all.

John reminds us that although we are already God's children, an even more glorious day is coming. One day, Jesus will appear, and we shall be like Him because we will see Him as He is. That wonderful hope should influence how we live today.

The apostle says, "Every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure." Hope in Christ's return is more than excitement about heaven; it is a motivation to pursue holiness. It leads us to examine our hearts, confess our sins, forgive others, guard our thoughts, choose our words carefully, and live lives that honor our Savior.

Purity is not merely outward appearance. It is a heart that seeks to please God. It is choosing honesty over deception, kindness over bitterness, forgiveness over resentment, and obedience over compromise. Every day we surrender ourselves to Christ, He continues the work of making us more like Him.

No bride waits until the wedding day to prepare her dress. No athlete waits until the day of the race to begin training. Likewise, God's people should not wait until Christ appears to begin preparing for His coming. Our preparation happens now, one surrendered day at a time. We cannot assume there will be another opportunity tomorrow. Every day is another chance to become more like the One we long to see.

The King is coming. May He find us clothed, not merely in our finest garments, but in the righteousness of Christ, with hearts made pure through His grace. Then, when we see Him face to face, we will rejoice—not because of our own goodness, but because His grace has prepared us to stand in His presence.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise that one day we will see Jesus face to face. Help us to live each day in a way that reflects Your character. Purify our hearts, strengthen our faith, and make us more like Christ as we wait for His glorious appearing. May we be found faithful and ready when our King returns. In Jesus' name, Amen.
