August 3: Burdens Are Lifted at Calvary

Burdens Are Lifted at Calvary

Key Text

"Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."
1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

Some hymns have a way of speaking directly to the deepest needs of the human heart. "Burdens Are Lifted at Calvary," written and composed by John M. Moore in 1952, is one such hymn.

You will agree with me that days can be filled with hurt, pain, failure and disappointment. There are seasons when life feels overwhelming. There are times when it is difficult to get out of bed and face another day. The weight of grief, financial pressures, family struggles, illness or unanswered prayers can leave us feeling exhausted and discouraged.

The Apostle Paul understood that life was not always easy. He wrote, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable" (1 Corinthians 15:19). Our hope is not limited to this present life. It is anchored in the risen Christ, who has overcome sin, death and the grave.

It is in moments like these, when I face opposition, persecution and the many burdens of life, that I am reminded of the simple yet powerful truth found in this hymn: "Burdens are lifted at Calvary."

Why Calvary?

Because Calvary is where Jesus willingly bore the weight of our sins. It is where He carried the burden that we could never carry ourselves. At the cross, He demonstrated the immeasurable depth of God's love. Through His sacrifice, we received forgiveness instead of guilt, peace instead of condemnation, hope instead of despair and life instead of death.

Calvary reminds us that we do not have to carry our burdens alone. Jesus invites us to bring every fear, every disappointment, every heartache and every unanswered question to Him. He does not promise a life without trials, but He does promise His presence through every trial.

The hymn says:

"Cast your care on Jesus today,
Leave your worry and fear;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Jesus is very near."

What a beautiful invitation. We are not called to carry our burdens. We are called to cast them upon the One who cares for us. The same Saviour who died at Calvary walks beside us today. He sees every tear, knows every struggle and understands every silent prayer.

Whatever burden you may be carrying today, do not leave with it still resting on your shoulders. Bring it to the cross. Leave it at Calvary. Trust the One who gave His life for you, and allow Him to fill your heart with His peace.

Reflection Questions

  1. What burden have I been trying to carry instead of placing it into Christ's hands?

  2. How can I intentionally trust Jesus with my worries and fears today?

Statement

The cross is not only where our sins were forgiven. It is also where our burdens find their resting place.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the cross of Calvary, where Jesus bore the burden of my sin and made a way for me to experience forgiveness, peace and hope. Today I bring every care, every fear and every disappointment to You. Teach me to trust You completely and to leave my burdens at the foot of the cross. Fill my heart with Your peace and remind me that You are always near. In Jesus' name, Amen.
