Hymn: A Child of the King
Words: Harriet E. Buell

Have you ever questioned your worth?

Have you ever felt like an outsider, as though you did not quite belong? Perhaps even within your own family, among friends, at church, at work, or in spaces where you thought you would be accepted, you somehow felt different, unseen or out of place.

There is something painful about not feeling that you belong.

Sometimes those experiences can cause us to question ourselves. We wonder whether we are good enough, important enough, wanted enough, or worthy enough.

But the hymn “A Child of the King” reminds us that our identity is not determined by how others see us, where we come from, what we possess, or whether people make room for us.

Our identity is grounded in Jesus.

The hymn makes a powerful declaration:

“I’m a child of the King.”

Those are more than words to sing. They are words of assurance.

Romans 8 tells us that we are children of God, and if we are His children, we are also heirs.

Think about what that means.

I belong.

I have a Father.

I have a place in His family.

I have an inheritance.

I have an identity that no rejection, disappointment or earthly circumstance can take away.

One of the most powerful thoughts in the hymn is the movement from being an outcast and a stranger to being adopted.

Adoption changes identity.

The person who once stood outside is brought inside.

The stranger becomes family.

The one who did not belong is given a place.

The one without an inheritance becomes an heir.

This is what Jesus has done for us.

Through Him, we have been welcomed into the family of God.

There may be times when life still makes us feel like outsiders. There may be rooms where we are not invited, relationships in which we do not feel accepted, or circumstances that make us question our value.

But human rejection cannot cancel divine acceptance.

People may overlook you, but God knows your name.

People may make you feel as though you do not belong, but God calls you His child.

Your earthly circumstances may not reflect wealth or privilege, but your Father is the King.

That is the assurance this hymn gives us.

Our value is not measured by the house we live in, the money in our account, the title attached to our name, the family we were born into, or the people who accept us.

We are valuable because we belong to God.

The hymn even asks, in essence, why should I be consumed with whether I have a tent or a cottage when I know who my Father is and what He has promised?

That does not mean our present needs do not matter. It means our circumstances do not define us.

We can have little and still know that we are deeply loved.

We can experience rejection and still know that we are chosen.

We can feel alone and still know that we belong.

We can walk through difficult seasons and still lift our heads with the assurance:

I am a child of the King.

Perhaps today you need to remind yourself of that truth.

When your past tries to define you, remember whose child you are.

When rejection makes you question your worth, remember whose child you are.

When you compare your life with someone else's and feel that you have less, remember whose child you are.

When you feel unseen or forgotten, remember whose child you are.

Your identity is not found in people's opinions of you.

Your identity is not found in what you have accumulated.

Your identity is not even found in what has happened to you.

Your identity is found in Christ.

Sometimes life makes us feel like outsiders, but Jesus gives us a new name, a new family and a new identity.

I am loved.

I am accepted.

I belong.

I am an heir.

I am a child of the King.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have I allowed rejection, my past or the opinions of others to shape how I see myself?
  2. What would change in my life if I truly lived each day knowing that I am a child of God?
  3. When I feel like an outsider, can I remind myself that through Jesus I have already been given a place in God's family?

Statement

I am not defined by rejection, my past, my possessions or the opinions of others. Through Jesus, I belong to the family of God. I am loved, accepted and an heir to His promises. I am a child of the King.

Prayer

Father, thank You for calling me Your child. When I question my worth or feel that I do not belong, remind me that my identity is found in You. Help me to live with the assurance that I am loved, accepted and Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.
