August 31: Strength for the Weary

Image
Scripture: “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” – Isaiah 40:29 Sharon Campbell-Danvers  Today, I want to take a moment to talk about something we do not often hear addressed directly in our congregations: burnout. We hear words like stress, tiredness, and even depression, but rarely do we call it what it often is: burnout. The truth is that being burned out can become the root cause of many mental, emotional, and even physical health issues. Some of us are full of energy and we want everything done, and done well. We pride ourselves on multitasking, on being the first to arrive and the last to leave. We check all the boxes, never absent, never late, always going above and beyond. While that is commendable, the question remains: have we really gotten it right? The danger of burnout is that sometimes we do not even recognize it. We just keep going, pushing, striving, without pausing to notice the warning signs. I once read that we spe...

August 30: Living Love Out Loud

Image
Theme: Living a Life of Love   Corry Chambers Women’s Ministries Director, CIC  Scripture Reference: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV) That Sabbath morning is one I will never forget. As we were on our way to church, my husband noticed a fellow church member walking and decided to stop and offer her a ride. Just as we drew closer, she accidentally stepped right into a pile of dog filth. My immediate thought was, “Oh no! We can’t possibly let her into the car like that—the smell will be unbearable.” But to my surprise, my husband, dressed in his Sabbath best, didn’t hesitate. He pulled the car over, parked, and got out. With kindness and humility, he assisted the lady in cleaning off her shoes before she got in. My respect for him grew in that moment. His actions were a vivid reminder that love is not just something we speak—it is something we live out. He chose compassion over convenience. He demo...

August 29: Courage to Carry On

Her Strength and Grace Key Text: Joshua 1:9 Sharon Campbell-Danvers  Kings Seventh-day Adventist Church "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." Have you ever felt timid when faced with life changing decisions? Think about some of the changes you have had to go through recently. What were your first thoughts? Often our initial responses are filled with doubt, fear, or hesitation. These emotions can make us question our ability to move forward. For me, I know that I tend to be overly conscious when it comes to changes. I like comfort. Anything that takes me out of my comfort zone often creates deep feelings and emotions. Many times, I wrestle with God and agonize with Him to show me His plans and His ways. One of the ways I cope is by writing my needs and thoughts on prayer cards and placing them on the prayer wall. Keeping these petitions before me re...

August 28: Come Rest in Me

Image
Theme:   Finding True Rest Corry Chambers  Women’s Ministries Director, CIC   Scripture: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 When was the last time you had a good rest? How would you describe that rest? For most of us, when someone asks about our wellbeing, our answer is often the same: “I’m tired.” Tired in body, tired in mind, tired in spirit. But Jesus understands this exhaustion. He knows the burdens we carry—worries about family, health, finances, and the future. That’s why He extends a personal invitation: “Come to Me.” Notice He doesn’t tell us to keep pushing through or to ignore our weariness. He simply calls us closer to Himself. Martha in the Bible knew that feeling. In Luke 10:38–42, she was “worried and troubled about many things” while her sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet. Martha’s busyness wore her down, and in her frustration, she even asked Jesus to make Mary help her. But Jesus gently reminded h...

August 27:He Hears You

Theme:   God Answers Prayer Corry Chambers Women’s Ministries Director, CIC Scripture: “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” – Psalm 34:4 Teaching can sometimes feel like walking through fire. The classroom can be both a place of great reward and deep testing. I remember one day stepping into a class, only to be met by boys who took aim at me with an elastic slingshot. At that time in Jamaica, gang conflicts were rising, and many of the boys in my class came from communities torn by crime and violence. They were reluctant readers, often filling their books with drawings of weapons—guns more terrifying than anything I had ever seen in reality. That day, as they aimed at me, fear gripped my heart. I left the classroom weeping, broken, and torn in pieces. My tears became my prayer: “God, please save me.” I poured out my soul to Him, and in His faithfulness, He answered. Not only did He protect me in that moment, but He also opened a door for a ...

August 26: Modeling Christ in the Home

Image
Dr. Terry-Ann Robinson    Modeling Christ in the Home Key Text:  6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.  Deuteronomy 6:6-7 I sat scrolling through my phone. “Mommy, Mommy”, my daughter called. I heard her, but I was just not focused on what she had to say. I knew she wasn’t in trouble and just wanted to give me another story. “Mommy, mommy” she called again. “Didn’t you say that parents should put down their phone and listen to their children?” Torn between shock and embarrassment, I immediately placed the phone on the table and gave her my undivided attention. It was just a few weeks before, that my husband and I conducted a parenting seminar. What I told the parents not to do was exactly what I was doing. I had no idea that my childr...

August 25: Delighting in God’s Desire

Image
Delighting in God’s Desires Corry Chambers  Women’s Ministries Director CIC A devotional for youth and teens.  Scripture: “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4 (NKJV) What does it really mean to delight in the Lord? For teens, it’s easy to think delighting in God is just something “church people” talk about. But actually, it’s about learning to love God so much that He becomes your greatest joy—even more than your phone, sports, music, or hanging out with friends. Take David for example. He was just a teenager when he was out in the fields taking care of sheep. He didn’t have Wi-Fi, TikTok, or video games. But he had something greater—he spent time worshipping God, writing songs, and trusting Him with his whole heart. When everyone else was afraid of Goliath, David stepped up with confidence. Why? Because he delighted in God. His joy and strength came from his relationship with Him. Delighting in God doesn’t m...
